Today we continue with our stories from those who made it possible. To submit your story, post it on facebook or email admin@extrememakeoverspacecoast.com

—–

Being able to help with the Hurston’s home was such a privilege and joy! We worked on what we have a passion for…the veggie garden, fruit trees and potted trees for the house and porch. The best part was rubbing elbows with the real stars, the many professionals in the county and state who donated their time and materials for this very worthwhile project. Everyone seemed so passionate about what they were doing! During a planning meeting with Emil and his crew, we met Dave, the chicken coop creator. His enthusiasm was so contagious and, because he is a friend of the Hurston’s, was able to assure us that they would be wonderful stewards of this beautiful home. We are already seeing that this is the case! We wish the Hurston’s all the best for their family and their ministry.

- Kevin & Theresa Riley and the Rockledge Gardens team.

—–

I am still so touched by the opportunity I was given to help with this very deserving family – I met some wonderful new friends – Pat, Luis, Laura, Dana, Robert, so many to name but I remember all of them dear to my heart. I have watched this show and always said that I would LOVE to be able to have a job that is that rewarding and do what TY and all the designers do but the ones that seem to be the forgotten heros are the ones behind the scenes – the crew, bus drivers, planners, etc. – you guys made this “organized chaos” flow smoothly with all of the 500+ volunteers that were there pouring their heart out and I will cherish these memories forever – thanks for the wonderful oppotunity to be a part of this. God Bless!!

- Annette Rizzo Carroll

—–

My fondest memory was seeing the sense of teamwork and committment on everyone’s face when there was t-minus 3 hour til reveal time. No one got upset but yet pulled together emotionally and did a fabulous job. This was headed by Lifestyle Homes great team and was carried on to the workers on site. Great leadership produced a great team.

- Tim Caudill, Icon Embroidery Corporation

—–

My fondest memory was an opportunity to learn how a “Blitz Build” works, which is something I wanted to see/be a part of since I volunteer with Habitat for Humanity every weekend. Jake L. from Lifestyle Homes did a great job leading us all in doing something good for a family that is so involved with helping others. Of course meeting Michael before moving in the furniture was awesome too. Thanks again to LifeStyle Homes and EMHE for the experience of a lifetime!

- Renee Thurn

Clearly you can see just how happy everyone is to have participated in the build, however, we wanted to hear from people who were actually on the ground first-hand! Over the next few weeks leading up to the show’s airdate (2/13/11) we will be featuring a few stories each day from folks who have submitted them on our Facebook wall. If you want your story up here, make sure you respond to the post, or email your fondest memories to admin@extrememakeoverspacecoast.com (please keep responses to 200 words or less).

—–

Being able to work in the most EXTREME environment Imaginable in the construction field and knowing I work for a company that had the sub base to pull it off and build this Extreme home in 106 Hrs. It was nerve racking at time but the most enjoyable project i have ever taken part in and I will never forget it. And I finally own a Hammer I will never lose.

- Mike Dourth

—–

My wife and I volunteered on Monday and my neighbor, Pat and I volunteered again on Thursday. My fondest memory, may sound corny, but I am retired Army and kind of detail oriented and much more disciplined than most…so I was amazed at how organized the event was managed. Hats off to Lifestyle homes cause I know it all starts at the top. Now, some of you may think differently, but from a very careful eye, you guys amazed me how this puzzle was created. Second, I was so blessed to have met so many nice people who also volunteered. The spirit of helpfulness in the community, was very refreshing. We have a great bunch of people who make up our community. God Bless you all from the servers in the food tent, to the ones handing out water, to the ditch diggers, sod layers and those skilled folk who ensured the success of this wonderful community event. As was stated on the “A Team” I love it when a plan comes together!!! Great Job!!

- Tim Pishdad

—–

As a general Contractor myself in Brevard County being chosen to be a lead and be able bring my crew to work side by side with so many different Contractors from around the County and having never worked with them before this build, I was amazed that so many trades could work side by side and not hear the traditional foul language that you typically hear on a job site and that the tradesmen and volunteers never lost there tempers. The challenge of building the house in 106 hours was not the only challenge that needed to be met. Brevard County did as great job working together for a great cause.

- Craig Capion, Done Right Contracting LLC

THE “GOLDEN RULE” IN ACTION IN THE SUNSHINE STATE!

ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Lifestyle Homes
Give Back to Giving Cocoa, Florida Family

COCOA, FL – (January 7, 2011) –
The Hurston family of Cocoa, Florida, was ambushed this morning by the energetic design team from ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and were told their home was chosen for an “extreme” makeover. “Doing unto others” has earned this family a new home in a week.

Ty Pennington, along with designers Michael Moloney, Paige Hemmis, and Eduardo Xol, from ABC’s Emmy award-winning show surprised Joe and Cindy Hurston and their children, Juliet, 16, Peter, 12, and four-year Dieunika with the good news.
While the Hurston family was on a charitable relief effort, a pipe burst in an upstairs bathroom, destroying much of their home and personal belongings due to the extensive, undetected flooding. With little money from the insurance company to repair water damage, the Hurstons have been living in the flood-damaged home for now over a year.

Joe’s piloting skills and Cindy’s nursing skills have helped others during twenty-five years of international relief work. They have instilled in their children the joy and reward from helping others in the local, national and global communities. As a result, the Hurston family truly works together, sacrificing personal time, comfort and safety, to lend a helping hand in numerous charitable missions. Juliet, their oldest daughter, rallies her friends to get involved in many of the community projects she spearheads as well.

With a passion to “provide clean water to a thirsty world”, the Hurstons recognize the importance of clean water for healthy and successful survival of a culture. A mission dear to their heart is delivering and installing water purification devices to disaster-ravaged parts of the world. To support that effort, the Hurstons established Air Mobile Ministries, a disaster relief 501(c)(3) non-profit business. Through donations, they manufacture the Voyager, a portable water purifier. To date, the Hurstons have delivered and installed approximately 660 water purification devices in 38 countries, literally saving thousands of lives. To support their family, Joe has a toner cartridge refilling company, and Cindy has a small café. Their son, Peter, has accompanied his parents on charitable missions to deliver water purifiers; he is now learning to fly so he can continue his parents’ work.

Years before the devastating 2010 earthquake, Joe and Cindy Hurston provided aid to Haiti. Their daughters Juliet and Dieunika, adopted from Haiiti when they were 3 and 2, respectively, see their parents work to improve living conditions in the girls’ homeland. The Hurstons also use their resources to transport rescue personnel, supplies and administer life-saving aid in U. S. disasters as well. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Joe found himself in the bittersweet position of providing aid to his hometown, New Orleans.

Embodying the phrase “Service with a smile,” the Hurstons have taken in individuals who are in need in their own community — people who are down on their luck and people in recovery from drugs or alcohol. Every Sunday, the family visits an inpatient psychiatric hospital, helping to encourage teens struggling with various issues.

Putting their needs aside, the family continues to help others while they are in desperate need of repairs to their own home. Additionally, the money needed to repair their donated disaster-relief plane threatens to hamper their relief efforts. Ironically, due to the flood damage, the Hurstons have been living without water and have been using the same water purification system that they’ve delivered to thousands of others; their desire to help others has not wavered because of their misfortune.

Courtesy of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition show, the Hurstons are off on a family vacation to San Diego, California. Meanwhile, Lifestyle Homes, the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition crew, thousands of volunteers from within the Space Coast community and beyond, will prepare to launch a mission: giving back to the family that’s given so much.

Jake Luhn, CEO of Lifestyle Homes, Melbourne, Florida, was honored that his company was contacted by Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to build the house for the Hurstons, but he was even more pleased to build a house that will ease the Hurstons’ burden, and allow them to continue providing their invaluable service to the world.

The fast-paced construction of the house begins on January 8, and will continue at a staggering pace until the crowds gather to “move that bus” on January 14, and welcome the Hurston family to their new home.

Volunteers who are scheduled to help build the home and VIPs cannot drive to the site. Volunteers and VIPs may only enter the site using a bus shuttle service, located at the Central Disposal Facility (Cocoa Landfill), 2250 Adamson Road, Cocoa, Florida, 32926. The shuttle service for volunteers and VIPs will run continuously.

During the build, the public can monitor progress 24-hours a day by visiting the web site: www.extrememakeoverspacecoast.com. The public may visit the site from January 9 to January 14. The public cannot drive to the site. The public may only visit the site using a bus shuttle service provided by RedCoachUSA.com, located at Central Disposal Facility (Cocoa Landfill), 2250 Adamson Road, Cocoa, Florida, 32926. The shuttle service will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

WHY: The LifeStyle Homes team will be joined by Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Senior Producer Milan Vasic and retired space shuttle astronaut Bob Springer to kick off the upcoming Space Coast build. They will explain how people can volunteer. They will also introduce many of the partners who have volunteered to help build a new home for a worthy Space Coast family in a week.

Vasic will then show a special presentation of highlights from the past seven years of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Many folks have openly wept at past pep rallies, as they watched the heart-warming stories of deserving families who have been helped by neighbors in their communities working together for free.

“People all across America have volunteered to help so many worthy families” said Vasic. “We’re pleased Jake Luhn and the LifeStyle Homes team answered our call and said ‘Yes, we’ll help too!’ This Pep Rally is a chance for the Space Coast to come out and see special ‘behind the scenes’ footage from over seven years of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. You don’t want to miss it.”

“We are thrilled that Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has selected a Space Coast family for their next makeover and we are excited to not only help make a difference in the lives of a deserving family, but to also play a part in inspiring the Space Coast community for a great cause. I’m excited to see our community step up to the plate to help this family.” said Luhn.

“We are proud to host the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Space Coast Pep Rally at

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and to support our community for this great endeavor,” said Bill Moore, Chief Operating Officer at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. “In the spirit of launching more than 100 missions into space, we hope to inspire volunteers to come together for this worthy cause and to help launch this family on a new home adventure.”

Ty Pennington, team leader of the show, as well as his design team, will notify the selected Space Coast family by surprising them at their residence soon.
